Conserving Art

Rabbit Hill Studio provides comprehensive conservation for oil and acrylic paintings. Joshua Adam Risner combines a deep respect for the artist's original intent with rigorous archival standards.

Technical Treatments & Process

Structural Consolidation Treating flaking or "cupping" paint layers by introducing archival adhesives to re-establish the bond between the paint film and the ground layer or support.
Surface Cleaning & Varnish Removal The delicate removal of accumulated soot, nicotine, and grime. We also specialize in the removal of aged, discolored natural resin varnishes (such as Dammar or Mastic) that obscure the artist’s original color palette.
Tear Repair & Lining Mending punctures or tears using bridge-bonding or thread-by-thread reweaving. When a canvas is too brittle to support itself, we perform traditional relining or strip-lining to provide structural integrity.
Loss Filling & In-painting Filling areas of missing paint with specialized gesso to match the surrounding texture. We use high-grade conservation pigments for in-painting, ensuring that all restorations are stable and stay within the areas of loss.
Archival Varnishing Applying modern, non-yellowing synthetic resin varnishes that provide superior protection against UV light and pollutants, while remaining fully reversible for future conservators.

Every treatment is preceded by a thorough condition report and followed by detailed photographic documentation.
