Insights into the Studio, the Craft, and the Conservation Process
All work is overseen by Joshua Adam Risner, who serves as the Curator of Fine Art and Artist in Residence at the Michigan State Capitol. Whether it is a private family heirloom or a public historical portrait, every piece receives the same level of institutional scrutiny and museum-standard care.
Visible signs such as yellowing or "cloudy" varnish, flaking paint, or structural damage like tears and punctures are clear indicators. However, even if a painting looks intact, accumulated surface pollutants can slowly degrade the canvas over time. We provide detailed assessments to determine if intervention is necessary to ensure the work's longevity.
Adhering to the AIC (American Institute for Conservation) Code of Ethics, we prioritize reversibility. We use high-grade, stable materials that can be safely removed by future conservators without altering the original paint layer. This approach protects the artist's original hand while allowing the piece to be maintained for centuries.
The process begins with a conversation about your vision. Joshua specializes in "Creating a Living Presence," utilizing techniques from the Old Masters to ensure the painting has depth, soul, and longevity. We offer consultations to discuss size, medium, and the narrative of the piece.
Rabbit Hill Art Studio was founded on the idea that art should reinvigorate our sense of wonder. Located a half-hour north of Grand Rapids, our studio overlooks Pickerel Lake. This intentional placemaking provides a meditative environment that is essential for the focus and precision required for fine art and conservation work.
Yes. We offer one-week residencies for artists looking to study advanced painting techniques, materials, and content. Residents have access to our studio space and extensive collection of art books, providing a sanctuary for creative growth away from the city's pace.
